A spokesperson for the Australia Friends said: “During his tenure, he raised the public profile of the Australian Friends and he initiated a hugely successful student scholarship appeal that has enabled numerous Israeli students to obtain much-needed financial assistance to reach their goals.  He supervised the organisation’s centralisation; managed the funds for scholarships and produced high-level social functions. Barry’s popularity, tenacious attention to detail, and well-known warm and caring personality have yielded new supporters and respect for the Hebrew University—from office staff to Australia’s Prime Minister.”

Sydney-based Barry Joseph is currently a board member of the Montefiore Home which he joined in 2001. He said:  “My years with the AUSTFHU have given me a greater appreciation of  education and the donors who have helped make the Hebrew University an outstanding place of learning.”

The Honorary Fellowship was presented to Barry Joseph in Jerusalem by Professor Menahem Ben-Sasson, President of the Hebrew University. Its citation reads: “In appreciation of his two decades of dedicated service, warmth and leadership to the Australian Friends; in gratitude for his successful initiatives to support student scholarships as well as his vision as a natural ambassador of the University throughout NSW and the wider Australian community; and in acknowledgement of his commitment to improving the social welfare of the elderly in his community.”
