The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies will undertake its first-ever bridge-building visit to Broken Hill next week.

Board of Deputies chief executive officer Vic Alhadeff will spend two days there, speaking with faith leaders, a service club and media, and addressing high school students on the Arab-Israel issue and the Holocaust.

This will be followed by a three-day bridge-building tour to Newcastle, where he will be joined by Board of Deputies education manager Marilyn Immerman and education manager Suzanne Green, who will deliver presentations on Judaism.

“Regional NSW is a significant part of our state and these bridge-building tours create an opportunity for the Jewish community to engage with key sectors of society outside metropolitan Sydney,” said Alhadeff. “It’s a very important activity which enables us to get our message out and to talk about issues of concern to the community.”

Broken Hill formerly had a Jewish community which dated from the beginnings of non-Indigenous settlement there, around 1885. The community grew to about 250 in the 1920s, but dissipated after World War II, when members relocated to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The last Jew of Broken Hill, Alwyn Edelman, died in 2005 and is buried in the Jewish section of the cemetery.

A synagogue was built in 1910 and its structure is probably the most remote Jewish museum in the world today. The synagogue closed its doors in 1962 and the Broken Hill Historical Society has preserved its origins and significance.

Previous bridge-building tours have included Coonabarabran, Mudgee, Wagga Wagga, Byron Bay, Cootamundra, Griffith, Forbes and Narrabri.

Buna seara Otto, my daughter is a missionair in Romania and speaks the lingo fluently. I speak Dutch, German a bit of Africaans and learning a little Romanianand would trade them all in to speak Hebrew. Can I come and join in too? Although I’don’t follow Judeaism I am Hebrew (and proud of it) I’d love to say hello to Vic & co. and you. Starved for my own kind. Not many of us here in Tamworth. I believe that at times a Rabbi comes though the area from Victoria but never get to see or speak with them either. Only on rare occassions do I get to SYdney and not always on a Wednesday to go to the Great Synagogue. So take pity on us country bumkins and come through Tamworth.

      They have been to Tamworth

      • Otto Waldmann says:

so there, Apostle Vic, as in “per pedes apostolorum”…………….

    • Otto Waldmann says:

OK, Eleonora, you broke my heart ( mi-ai frint inima, m-i s-a facut mila etc. ), but , unfortunately, you’ll have to manage without me in Tamworth. Otherwise you may contact me mate, Vic, who , I reckon, could master a bit of Africaan as well, judging by the way he insists to speak English and see if he can find an extra seat in his limo for you.
Incidentally, the same Vic has been endowed with the greatest sense of humour and ,I am sure, he ( unlike “some” ) got mine in the best stride.

Noapte buna, Lenutzo.( “good night Lenny” Rom.)

    Not funny Otto

    • Otto Waldmann says:

Why, very-funny-Norman, show me the gravity and mournfulnes of the situation and will sit shives right next toya.

Are you for real, is this actually happening, is Vic and Co. really building that bridge to Broken Hill !!!!??? This is the greatest news I have heard/seen/faced frontally etc. without collapsing with cardiac arrest, diabetic attack or even non-stop sneazing. I had a fairly hard week, spent 2 nighgts in hospital, was found N O R M A L and sane, but the news about Broken Hill is the greatest since David Landau thanked the same Board for their hospitality. After Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Mt. Druit etc. Broken Hill, with all that thirst and passion for seeing a few Yids talkin’ cool hot stuff takes the cake ( and considering that I am not allowed sweets taking the cake is a big ask !!).

Hey, Vic mate, can I come along, I speak fluent Romanian !!!

Incidentlally, here’s a little eitzes to help the Board financially. Since we have been building all those bridges, howz about we charge a modest toll for crossing the bridge, say anyone crossing us pays something and that will go into the President’s Retirement Fund, providing he retires at once !!
