Out of the 28 nominees trying out for a place in the team in Melbourne last week, eight out of nine NSW nominees were successful in making it into the Australian team.

They are: Greg Diamond, Nahar Pleshet, Jack Burman, Dylan Katz, Jordan Spyrides, Matt Gamerov, Jayden Gordoun and Jeremy Stein.

Dylan Katz is thrilled about the opportunity.

“It’s very exciting being part of the Australian basketball team going to the JCC Maccabi Games. Not only will we play lots of basketball, but we’ll get to travel to the USA and meet players from around the world. We will be up against very competitive teams and hopefully we’ll return as stronger players.”

Maccabi NSW Basketball Administrator, Marissa Ely, said that competing at the JCC Games is a memorable experience.

“The JCC North American Youth Games was something that I experienced back in 1994.

I was the only NSW girl, which made me feel proud, however I loved the whole experience of meeting Jewish people from all over the world and the “ruach” that was present when the Australian’s marched in at the opening ceremony. Swapping team pins, mini koalas, and Aussie flags, going to Disneyland and feeling part of the Aussie squad is something I will never forget. I still have my Australian singlet and all the pins I received.

Having eight NSW boys participate in the 2015 JCC Games is something that I am extremely proud of and do hope that they treasure the experience. Who knows what opportunities it will present for their sporting careers as Maccabi Basketballers?”
