16-yr-old Mimi Weiss has taken out the 2012 Harmony Day Song Writing Competition.

Mimi gets her prize from Armondo Hurley

The award was presented by singer/performer Armondo Hurley at the NSW State Parliament.

Mimi told J-Wire that her mother came from a musical father but her father’s musical claim to fame was playing the triangle.

She said that she wanted to pursue a career in song-writing.

Organiser Ernie Friedlander told J-Wire: “It has been exciting for us to share and acknowledge the wonderful efforts of all these young Australians. They travelled from as far as Albury, Byron Bay, Armidale and Tamworth. The Parliament theatrette was packed to capacity more than twenty had to stand.”

The  poster competition had more than 4000 entries which has been going for seven years but this is only the second year where in which song-writing has featured.”

Friedlander, who heads the Alfred Dreyfus Anti-Defamation Unit of the B’nai B’rith and was Chair of the Organising Committee said that Australia needs to be appreciated and that his group was preparing for Harmony Walk in October…inspired by the 10th annivdresary of the Bali bombing. Friedlander added: “This will make a statement against racism and violence.”

The lyrics:

ITS UP TO YOU AND ME
Music and Lyrics by Mimi Weiss Moriah College, Year 10.
Life – it’s pretty simple, our sky is mainly clear
For us we’re far from danger, we shed barely a tear But life ain’t quite as easy on the flipside of the map While we take for granted, others are entrapped
Got to stop to spectate, lets participate
Educate, emancipate and liberate
Lets build foundations for the bridge of harmony So we’ll bond together in a coloured symphony
We are the future
We hold our own destiny
Our generation could promise security Its up to us to make a change
And help increase equality
To stop poverty, to make peace, to free Its up to you and me
CHILDREN are crying, BABIES are dying,
CRIME is sky-highing, COUNTRIES are fighting,
BARELY surviving, SLAVERY is thriving, WHY are we sighing? GOTTA start trying To bring us together, to make things get better,
its now or its never lets change for the better
We are the future
We hold our own destiny
We are the generation that could promise security Its up to us to make a change
And help increase equality
To stop poverty, to make peace, to free
Its up to you and me

Mazal tov to my wonderful grandaughter on her amazing song and very meaningful lyrics.

In truth it is her grandmother who has inspired our daughter Debbie and her children Mimi and Sam to be the wonderful musicians they are.
