The submission highlights that as the largest provider of community services in the Jewish community JewishCare is well positioned to know the problems encountered by clients in accessing appropriate and affordable housing.

“So many of our clients are finding it difficult to find somewhere to live.  If they are relying on Centrelink payments, they generally do not have enough money to access the private rental market and waiting times for social and public housing run into years” says Claire Vernon Chief Executive Officer at JewishCare.

The JewishCare submission also included the experience of people with an intellectual disability or mental illness and there shortage of affordable accommodation.

“JewishCare can provide the case management and support which is a critical component in keeping people well but the roof over the head is essential”

JewishCare does run four houses for 15 people with an intellectual disability and has six tenancies with a NSW Community Housing Provider which can provide transition housing up to two years.  As outlined in the submission it is the view of JewishCare that it is not crisis or short term housing which is the problem, but permanent ongoing housing.
