Sydney’s Hakoah Club has lodged a Development Application with Woollahra Council for the redevelopment of its White City site.

The club plans to create a brand new sporting, recreational, social and cultural heart, for members and the community.

The DA was accompanied by a large-scale model and exciting 3D graphics. They show how the development will be seen in the context of the surrounding landscape and how our community will enjoy these new facilities.

The Club has carefully considered the heritage issues surrounding the site. From the outset the Club has stated that it intends to celebrate the heritage significance of White City in a meaningful way, which at the same time allows development to take place. In keeping with that commitment, the DA was accompanied by a very detailed Heritage Interpretation Strategy produced by Stephen Davies and our architect Michael Mandl.  It sets out the manner in which certain structures will be retained and/or adapted to become architectural features. It also details how the history of the site will be interpreted in a relevant way, given that many of the current buildings are dilapidated beyond repair.

Stephen is one of the country’s leading heritage experts, whose credentials include numerous Ministerial and Heritage Review Panel appointments. He is a former Deputy Director and Head, Conservation of the National Trust of Australia, NSW and Victoria and is currently a Minister appointed member of the Heritage Council of NSW.  Michael has been involved with numerous significant heritage projects, including Queens Square Law Courts, Sydney Theatre Walsh Bay and Paddington Town Hall.

The Board  has formed a new Development Committee co-chaired by Allen Linz and Phillip Wolanski, both well-known in the community with extensive property development experience.

In the four months since it was established it has

  • commissioned a peer review of the work and plans which has subsequently been endorsed
  • developed our strategy to secure Council approval
  • dealt with the heritage issues and changes in 2015 to the complex planning legislation governing White City
  • commissioned legal and planning advice to facilitate the development of our DA

This team effort has culminated in the lodgement of the DA.  The Club will continue to work with the Council and residents in an attempt to achieve a successful outcome.

Invitations are being sent to residents and stakeholders to attend a community consultation session to discuss the concept plans. In addition, a dedicated briefing will be made to the Committee of the Paddington Society.

Woollahra municipality does not have a single full-size synthetic football field, indoor aquatic facility or indoor sports centre, lagging behind other local government areas.

Our development will provide outstanding facilities for members and the community, including:

  • An indoor aquatic centre with 6-lane lap pool and separate learn-to-swim pool
  • An indoor multi-purpose sports complex to facilitate tennis, basketball, netball and futsal
  • A full size synthetic football field
  • Child care centre
  • A children’s playground
  • Community facilities
  • Hakoah club facilities
  • Bistro/restaurant
  • Indoor/outdoor café
  • Gymnasium

Due to the scale of the project, the building work will have to be staged. The Board is confident that what we have proposed, will create the foundations for the heart of the community’s sporting and social hub for generations to come.

Great news. Congratulations to all concerned in bringing this first stage to fruition.
The Board has met its assurances given to the members earlier this year and is to be commended on the exciting plans that have been presented to Woollahra Council for approval.
