The president of Guatemala took to Facebook to tell his people that their country’s embassy in Israel is to be moved to Jerusalem.

President Jimmy Morales

President Jimmy Morales wrote:

“Dear people of Guatemala, today I spoke with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. We are talking about the excellent relations that we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the state of Israel.

One of the most important topics was the return of the embassy of Guatemala to Jerusalem.

So I inform you that I have instructed the chancellor to initiate the respective coordination so that it may be.

God bless you.”

Guatemala was one of nine nations that voted with the United States and Israel when the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted against Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said:  “Last night I spoke with my friend, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales. I thanked him for Guatemala’s support for us in the UN [General Assembly] vote and I expressed my hope that he would follow in the footsteps of US President Donald Trump, recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begin to move the embassy to it.

We are waiting for you here in Jerusalem.

I told you recently that there will be other countries that would recognise Jerusalem and announce the transfer of their embassies to it. Well here is the second country and I reiterate: It is only the beginning and it is important.”

Israel’s ambassador to Australia Mark Sofer told J-Wire: “The recognition of the simple fact that Jerusalem has always been the capital of Israel and always will be, is growing throughout the international community. Guatemala has been a strong supporter of the Jewish state since its rebirth in 1948.”

Australia abstained and New Zealand voted for the resolution.

    G-D Bless you, mighty Guatemala.

Just another central American “banana” republic.

    • david singer says:

Other “banana republics” are Cuba, Ghana, Nigeria, Laos, Bangladesh and Botswana who voted in favour of the UN resolution against the US declaring Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel.

Bangladesh doesn’t even recognize the State of Israel – do you?

Guatemala obviously has made a decision in accordance with its national interests – as have the others. That is what counts in the end when push gets to shove. They all have to live with the consequences of their vote.

      • Adrian Jackson says:

Israel exists; the then UN said so in the later 1940’s.

Most of these smaller “banana” republics suck up to the USA for arms and civil aids.

China will move into any vacuum if the USA stops providing aid. China is already active in Africa and with the island nations in the South Pacific.
