The distinguished lawyer and businessman served as a director of the bank between 2002 and 2007. Current ANZ Chairman John Morschel said in a statement that Gonski’s “broad range of involvement with government and with the education and community sectors will be a significant asset for ANZ”.

Gonski said that the ANZ “is in a strong position'”.

He is currently Chairman of Coca-Cola Amatil, the Guardians of the Future fund, Investec Bank (Australia) and a director of Singapore Communications. Gonski is also Chancellor of the University of New South Wales, Chairman of the Sydney Theatre Company  and a director of Infrastructure NSW and the Lowy Institute for International Policy.

Following the ANZ announcement David Gonski said: “I confirm I will be relinquishing some of my current commitments. I intend to step down as Chairman of the Guardians of the Future Fund during January 2014 so as to avoid any possible conflict of interest with my new position and allowing sufficient time for a smooth transition and handover to my successor, who will be appointed by the Federal Government.

It has been a privilege and honour to serve on the Future Fund. I appreciate the support of the two Ministers of Finance under whom I have served and that of my fellow Guardians. I admire the commitment and dedication of management, entrusted with the responsibility to develop and effectively grow this significant strategic investment organisation which benefits Australia.

I also confirm that in addition to the ANZ, my major involvements will continue to be as Chairman of Coca-Cola Amatil, a Director of Singapore Telecommunications, Chancellor of the University of New South Wales and Chairman of the Sydney Theatre Company.”

David Gonski enjoys the reputation of being willing and available to offer advice to charities and community organisations seeking it.

New Zealander Ian Narev is Managing Director and CEO of the Commonwealth Bank Group.
