A letter arrived in the mail yesterday for Liz Pozniak….a ticket voucher from Qantas and an apology for her nervous time on board QF6  , the second of their aircraft to have had an engine burst into flames within a week.

Liz Pozniak on board QF6

QF6 back on the ground at Singapore

Pozniak, returning home after a business trip to Asia, told J-Wire of her experience on board QF6 on November 4…one day after an engine on one of the national carrier’s A380s caught fire.

“I was heading home to Sydney from Singapore on the same plane carrying the captain of a Qantas A380 which had had serious engine problems the day before …and looking forward to seeing my husband Sheldon with whom I was planning to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. We had just taken off and had travelled no more than four minutes when there was a loud bang. The passenger next to me told me it ‘was just the wheels going up’ but I have travelled too much to have believed that. Suddenly, a woman screamed out that one of the engines was on fire and I thought to myself that I wasn’t going to make it to my 4th anniversary. Even though there was a smell of smoke,  the Boeing 747 captain calmed us down saying ‘This is not going to be our night’ and telling us that he had shut down the engine and that we had to jettison fuel before returning to Singapore. How did I feel? I was 90% calm as was the rest of the plane. Contrary to media reports, the only scream I heard was the initial one when the fire was discovered. But I must admit 10% of me feared the worst.”

Liz Pozniak - happy to be on the ground in Singapore

Pozniak, a corporate trainer who had been working in Bangkok, Manilla, Jakarta and Singapore said the plane’s passenger cheered and clapped when the plane touched down at Changi Airport in Singapore.

Instead of an anniversary weekend with husband Sheldon in Sydney, Pozniak spent an unscheduled two days with friends in Singapore before returning home. She said that Qantas had offered counselling…as well as the $1200 ticket voucher.

J-Wire asked Pozniak if she felt confident about flying with Qantas in the future. Waving her voucher she said: “Absolutely. Still one of the best airlines in the world and I’ll be cashing in this voucher sooner rather than later.”
