Four $500 prizes to be won by Year 10 students

The Australian Jewish Historical Society is offering four prizes of $500 for an essay on Jewish Australian soldiers who fought in World War 1.

AJHSThe essay should be based on an experience by a family member or by research on a person who was an Australian Jewish soldier, sailor or nurse who served in World War 1. Ideally the story will be about someone from the writer’s state, but it could also be a member of your family who could also have fought for either the Allies or the Axis powers.

The essays must be in English and should be submitted to the AJHS at essay@ajhs.com.au no later than April 15.

They should contain no less than 1,500 words and no more than 4,000.

THE AJHS is also interested in photographic essays containing no less than 25 images with a minimum of 500 and maximum of 2000 word.

The essays should be in a PDF format or Word document and should not feature Sir John Monash as a main subject.

  1. Essays are to be submitted with a title page stating the title of the Essay, and the name, address, date of birth and contact details of the writer, as well as the school the student attends.
  2. Essays will be judged by a panel selected by the AJHS.

Students are encouraged to use TROVE at nla.gov.au as a reference source.

    The recommendation to use TROVE as a source is a telling indication that the Australian Jewish community lacks a central archive in which students might be able to research their essays.
