The agricultural community of the Arava in Israel  is a living miracle of Israel that has turned the dry, barren desert into the Land of Milk and Honey…and will demonstrate their culinary skills in Australia.

Once again, due to the trailblazing success of the first such delegation in Melbourne in 2014, The AAP (Arava Australia Partnership) will be hosting six representatives, five females and one male, from the Arava community on a Culinary Delegation in Sydney from 26th November to 2nd December 2015. For the first time, a delegation will be hosted in Perth from 2nd December to the 8th December 2015.

Through the celebration of different traditions in the two communities revolving around food, the aim of the delegation is to build a culture of partnership between people aged 35+ in Australia and the Arava. We aim to highlight Jewish identity and promote ongoing ties between delegates, hosts and the wider community.

Shahar Livne from the Arava said: “I want to bring my love of food and of the Arava to Australia. I want to share my roots and my strong connection to Israel with those I meet during the delegation.”

Delegates will participate in activities and workshops revolving around food, to which members of the communities in Perth and Sydney will be invited. Our guests will have an opportunity to engage with Jewish day schools and communal bodies in order to learn about the Jewish community in Australia, more specifically in Sydney and Perth, and to bring something of the special ambience of the Arava to Australia. The delegation will also be meeting with some members of parliament in Perth as well as engaging with Aboriginal and other communities. Meetings with Australians chef’s and caterers will also be on the agenda and as well as culinary tours of the cities.

Evelyn Biton, the group leader, said: “I am looking forward to representing the Arava and all its facets. Australia is a very Zionistic community and here in the Arava, we continue to make the desert bloom.”

The project will create opportunity for new and ongoing friendships between members of the two communities; an exchange of ideas, recipes and methods in food preparation will enable delegates to connect on the basis of a common interest.
