The school bell rings, it’s lunch time. Food, wrappers, drink containers, serviettes – all by-products of a healthy lunchbox but potentially a problem in the environment. This year Sydney’s Emanuel School students have decided to celebrate Clean Up Australia Day with a twist and help eradicate litter in the School playground permanently.

With the rise of awareness of the ongoing destructive results of waste on our environment,  Emanuel students promoted a 30-day clean up challenge. Each School House has been allocated an area to keep clean of rubbish, which will culminate in the ‘Cleanest House Award’ on Clean Up Day. This 30-day challenge is an initiative that the Randwick School regularly uses to bring about change, with the belief that doing something for an extended period creates a habit that lasts.
Emanuel School Environment Madricha, Sharon Koren, who developed the idea of a month-long clean up challenge said, “Taking care of the environment is my biggest passion. The environment should be an integral part of our lives and it’s the responsibility of every single one of us to do whatever we can to improve it.  We can learn a lot from the Indigenous people who understand that the land is central to all aspects of our life.”
Emanuel School Principal, Anne Hastings, is proud of what the students have achieved, “By creating the 30-day clean up challenge, the students have made a conscious commitment to Tikkun Olam, ensuring that the environment has a helping hand through their ongoing actions.”
