The Pre-school initiated the project in 2013 in response to a request from Gunawirra, a not-for-profit charity, to help provide basic care packs for Aboriginal children in outback pre-schools across NSW.

“This year the response was even more overwhelming, with people who had heard about the project calling to ask if they could be a part of it,” Kornmehl Emanuel Pre-school director Terry Aizen said. “The care packs came pouring in from far and wide and we collected 1613 care packs to donate to this cause. The enthusiasm of the children and families has just been astounding. I thank the community for their support in helping to bring a smile to the faces of Aboriginal children in outback pre-schools across NSW.”

Gunawirra CEO Joy Krahe thanked all the schools involved “for your wonderful contribution to our most needy young Aboriginal children. We were overwhelmed with your generosity… the children were quite simply overjoyed.”

Kornmehl Emanuel Pre-school children brought in care packs including basic toiletries and undergarments, which they helped to sort, count and place in boxes for delivery. Five-year-old Noa commented, “We are doing Tikkun Olam to give the care packs to the Aboriginal children to help them. They are special care packs!”

This year, participants ranged from 20 pre-schools and long daycare centres, including Moriah College, Mount Sinai and Masada College Early Learning Centres, Coogee Batory Kindergarten and Emanuel Woollahra Pre-School, to two primary schools, a high school and even a NSW Council Chamber.
