Europe has been overrun by hostile aliens and millions have been killed.   This science fiction outing from Director Doug Liman requires a hero to save the world.

Tom Cruise is playing against type.  His Lt. Col. Bill Cage is not a man of action and expects to keep it that way.  The movie’s tough, buffed and much admired hero is played by Emily Blunt.

Cage is a US army PR man who has been seconded to the British Army. On meeting General Brigham (a bullish Brendon Gleeson), he is aghast to learn that he is expected to participate in the next day’s beach landing where many casualties are expected.  He tries his smoothest best to get out it but doesn’t succeed.  Demoted to Private and classified as a deserter, he is attached to J squad, lead by Master Sergeant Farell (Bill Paxton).

Next day, along with his squad, he is strapped into a Transformer style action suit and dropped onto a beach where the aliens are waiting.   Untrained for combat and unfamiliar with his clunky armour and weapons he manages to kill a particularly large and fierce dragon-like alien as it sprays blood all over him.

Cage lives and wakes up back at the base at the same point in time as he arrived there the previous day. This happens many times. Yes, it is a Groundhog Day scenario and is linked to the sprayed alien blood.

Cage teams up with Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), lauded hero of the only battle humans have won so far.   She trains him to be warrior as they search for a way to stop the war by destroying the master alien – Omega, a very powerful organism.

As you might expect from this genre, it is nonstop action. Special effects are excellent and combined with the sophisticated cinematography and editing creates a world which is both strange and familiar while providing some heart stopping moments

While not exactly a new theme it is very well done.   Sporting toned triceps, Emily Blunt is convincing as the experienced soldier.   Tom Cruise morphs from smooth talking PR persona to a man determined to do the right thing. This is one for the action/sci-fi fans and best seen in 3D.

Look out for Australian actors Kick Gurry (Griff) and Noah Taylor (Dr Carter).
