In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification, the Israeli Minister of Culture and Sport Miri Regev has announced that this year one member of the World Jewry will be chosen to light the Jewish People’s Torch at the Independence Day Ceremony on Mt. Herzl.

Minister Regev appeared this week in a short video as part of a campaign where she calls upon the Jewish people in the diaspora, to nominate a candidate who has contributed to the development, advancement and prosperity of Jerusalem.

This year, the main theme for the Lighting of the Torches will be the fiftieth anniversary of the reunification of Israel’s capital – Jerusalem.

For the time being Minister Regev has not yet decided whether the Jewish People’s Torch will become a permanent fixture at the annual ceremony as a part of the decision she is spearheading in the Ministerial Committee for Symbols and Ceremonies.Early next week a campaign will be launched among the Jewish communities in the diaspora. After recommendations will be received, a select committee will be convened to choose the winner’s name, which will be lighting the Jewish People’s Torch, according to a predefined set of criteria.  The campaign is being held jointly with the Ministry of the Diaspora affairs.Over the years we have seen numerous citizens from the entire spectrum of Israel’s population groups and sectors lighting the Independence Day Torches. However, this decision by Minister Regev, is intended to highlight the fact that Israel is the national home of the entire Jewish people and as such it is the one permanent home and safe haven of each and every Jew, wherever he or she may be.The committee calls upon the public to propose a candidate from the Jewish diaspora who personifies the concern and work being done for the future of the Jewish People, and reinforces the link between the world Jewry and Israel. Nominations may be made via email to masuot@most.gov.il, and submitted until Wednesday, April 3rd. The ceremony will be held on the eve of Israel’s Independence Day, May 1st, 2017.

Minister Miri Regev said: “Especially this year, with the entire ceremony being dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification, the Jewish people’s eternal capital, I have decided that one torch will be dedicated to a representative of the Jewish people in the diaspora. Israel is the Jewish People’s national homeland, a unique and eternal safe haven for each and every Jew in the world. I’m convinced this decision and the campaign we are running among Jewish communities abroad, will strengthen the commitment and bonds between these communities and Israel. It will encourage many among them to indorse Israel and Jerusalem”.

The other one, Laura Rabinovitch, in Tel Aviv, has a boy who is in Tsahal. Last year, I went at Mount Herzel and I was very very happy. My mother made her alya at 82 years. I hope to do it before ! but now, I have to be in Paris. I am a painter (www.spiritofmacha.com). I go every year in Israël. “If I want, it will not be a dream” to be lighting a torch at the national Independence Day. Shalom
