The ads placed in the Australian Jewish News and briefly on J-Wire by Michael Danby criticising ABC Middle East correspondent Sophie McNeill have been stamped with approval by Parliament.

Michael Danby

But the  federal Labor member for Melbourne Ports has told Sky news that there will no more ads following Danby’s meeting with Labor leader Bill Shorten who  “made the point that ads weren’t the most subtle way of communicating the message”. Danby said: “I accept this was his view. I won’t be doing ads on the Jerusalem correspondent of the ABC in the future.”

Sophie McNeill the correspondent Danby referred to had published reports of the murder of three members of a Jewish family enjoying their shabbat dinner without mentioning their names.

Danby compared the reportage with a story filed by the same correspondent of the eviction of a Palestinian family from their home in East Jerusalem accompanied by photographs and names.

However Danby’s has told J-Wire today that the ads were approved by Parliament. A spokesperson said: “Michael Danby’s office have confirmed that the advertisement about the ABC coverage advert has already been submitted and approved by parliament as being within guidelines.”

Dear Adrian, why not leave your phone number with Danby so he can call you and ask your permission next time he has any issue he wishes to highlight.

    How ridiculous Mr Jackson.
Danby not only has a right to use the funds as he did, but an absolute obligation to represent the full 20% of his electorate in this issue as every other issue.

If you don’t like it–vote for someone else as I am sure you do.

  2. Adrian Jackson says:

Before this ad, and similar taxpayer spending by MP’s, there was no consultation with Mr Danby’s constituents, including me, either.

I think many in Melbourne Ports support and like the ABC. The Friends of the ABC group (now called ABC Friends) are based in South Melbourne which is within Melbourne Ports electorate.

Personally I love the ABC and SBS. With commercial free to air station dying or becoming mediocre, soon only the ABC will be left to serve the community, all the community.

Michael Danby is a voice of balance at a time in our beloved country when radical and hateful views have gained currency.
Australia deserves more parliamentary representatives like Michael.
