Courage to Care on the road
Over the next two months, Melbourne’s B’nai Brith’s Courage to Care will take its award-winning travelling Educational Program and Exhibition to both Portland and Cranbourne.
The Portland Exhibition will be open to the public from 29 July to 19 August. Community members are invited to view the Exhibition and students at local and regional secondary schools are scheduled to attend an educational Program.
Courage to Care at Work
Courage to Care is a volunteer-run educational organisation that draws from lessons of Holocaust Survivors and their Rescuers to educate secondary school students about the perils of prejudice. Participants in the Courage to Care program are educated about the Holocaust as an extreme example of the effects of discrimination and prejudice. They are shown examples of Upstanders: individuals who have demonstrated remarkable humanity by risking their personal safety, their livelihood or their social status in standing up for victims of discrimination or prejudice.
In using the Holocaust as the background to a discussion about humanitarianism, Courage to Care sends overwhelmingly hopeful messages of: ‘Each Person can make a Difference’ and ‘Ordinary People are capable of Extraordinary Acts’. This idea is brought home to students attending the program in the context of a facilitated discussion that encourages students to be Upstanders.
A thoughtful moment
Now in its 22nd year, Courage to Care is on the threshold of an exciting new phase in its ongoing evolution. Courage to Care is proud to have secured a generous grant from Gandel Philanthropy to upgrade its travelling exhibition. That grant, together with the generosity of individual donors and raised through Courage to Care’s own fundraising efforts, will help to transform the existing exhibition into a state-of-the art, interactive experience.
The official launch of the Portland Exhibition will take place on Wednesday 29 July at 5:30pm at the Portland Arts Centre. Members of the public are invited The keynote address will be by Hon Dr Denis Napthine. Attendees will hear from 2015 Local Hero Kate Halstead who has given of her time to those in need in Nepal; hear a testimony by Holocaust Survivor Peter Gaspar and learn more about the Courage to Care program. The Exhibition will be officially opened by the Mayor of Glenelg, Cr. Robert Halliday. Following the Portland Exhibition, Courage to Care travels to Cranbourne where it will hosted by Lyndhurst Secondary College.
