Counter-terrorism expert delivers the Graf Oration
Over 400 people attended The Shalom Institute’s sixth Graf Oration held in Sydney this week,
Boaz Ganor, Hilton Immerman and Cameron Graf
The guest orator was Professor Boaz Ganor, a world leading expert on counter-terrorism from Israel. His topic was “Global Jihadi Terrorism – The growing threat of Global and local terrorism to Israel, Australia and the rest of the world.”
Following his address, he was interviewed by writer, former Australian diplomat and past opinion editor of ‘The Australian’ Rebecca Weisser.
This year the name of this important community event changed from “The Ervin Graf Memorial Oration” to “The Graf Oration.” The late Ervin and Kitty Graf were a remarkable couple who gave much to our community – and this change in name recognises and acknowledges them both.

Their grandson, Cameron Graf gave a short tribute to them. He a 3rd year Commerce/Law student at the University of New South Wales – and, like his grandparents and parents, he’s a communal leader, serving as the AUJS UNSW President and a CSG volunteer.
On the night, a presentation of the work of The Shalom Institute was made by Michael Misrachi (Shalom’s Education Director), Brandon Srot (Shalom’s Director of young Adults and Young Families) and Justine Saidman (Shalom’s PJ Library Director).
In addition to the Graf Oration, Prof Ganor gave addresses on Counterterrorism in the age of Islamic State to:
- Members of NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel, senior media staff and NGO and ethnic community leaders;
- The NSW Police Counterterrorism Command; and
- The Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counterterrorism PICT at Macquarie University.
The event was held at Sydney’s Shangri La Hotel.
