New Zealand’s Nelson City Council has agreed to change the name of the city’s Church Lane to Synagogue Lane.

A synagogue was built in this location in 1875 but was demolished in the 1920s.

Nelson was believed to have had a significant Jewish population during the 1860s gold rush but many moved away when that era came to its end.

The drive to have street name changed came from a local resident whose basis for the change was the confusion in mail deliveries with the nearby Church St.
