Foreign Minister Bob Carr has been advised by the Australian Embassy in Tel Aviv that Israel will conduct an investigation into the death in custody of a Palestinian prisoner.

Israel_dark_blue_border.svgCarr welcomed the enquiry into the death of Arafat Jaradat, arrested last week for a stone-throwing incident in 2011. He died in custody on February 23.

Senator Carr said Israeli authorities had confirmed that Mr Jaradat’s death was now the subject of a police investigation.

“Israeli authorities are aware of the significant international interest in this issue,” Senator Carr said.

“I welcome Israel’s confirmation that an investigation is under way

“It is important the circumstances of this death be thoroughly examined.”

Perhaps we should shift our focus to the many Aboriginal deaths in custody, Bob Carr. I know it’s not your portfolio, however, how hypocritical can you get! As Foreign Affairs Minister, how about taking your eagle eye off Israel for a little while and have a look around at the travesties taking place in other countries. You are Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, not the World’s. Oh, and did you know that throwing stones can result in the death of those on the receiving end?
