Senator Carr said Australia had strong diplomatic relations with Israel and welcomed the Jewish contribution to Australian national life.

“Australia has a steadfast friendship with Israel and values the exceptional contribution of its large and active Jewish community,” Senator Carr said.

“Australia and Israel share a commitment to democratic values, security, freedom and prosperity.”

Senator Carr said the diplomatic relationship was fostered by international visits between the two countries.

“High level bilateral exchanges over the last year have reaffirmed our friendship and served to enhance it,” Senator Carr said.

“These exchanges included visits to Israel by Australia’s Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the Senate, as well as my own trip to Israel last year.

“Australia has always had a deep commitment to Israel’s right to exist in peace and security.

“Australia was the first country to vote in favour of the 1947 UN partition resolution.

“In the past year Australia stood beside Israel as a number of security challenges emerged.

“I reaffirm to you Australia’s ongoing support for Israel’s pursuit of peace.

“I am confident the excellent relations that exist between Australia and Israel will continue to flourish in the year ahead.”
