Volunteers who served in Israel during the Six-Day War are encouraged to attend the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies plenum next week, which will feature the 50th anniversary of the war.

Harry Schnapp

Sydney resident Harry Schnapp will share the experiences of his service during the war as a sergeant in the Israel Defence Force Sergeant; this will take the form of a Q&A session with Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff.

This will be followed by political commentary by Dr Ron Weiser, who will speak about the aftermath of the war and its political ramifications.

“All Sydneysiders who were there during that pivotal moment in Israel’s history are urged to attend next week’s plenum,” Alhadeff said. “It will be an opportunity to hear from one who played a role in the momentous events, as well as a political overview from one of the community’s foremost authorities on the conflict.”

Dr Ron Weiser

Harry Schnapp was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1948 and migrated to Israel in 1961. He commenced IDF service in 1966. He studied biomedical engineering at the Milan Polytechnic in 1971, and on migrating to Sydney served as member of the Mount Sinai College board of management and Coogee Synagogue board of management for over 20 years, the last five of which he served as president. He holds an engineering degree from the University of NSW, working in the NSW energy industry in various capacities.

Dr Weiser is honorary life president of the Zionist Council of NSW and past president of the Zionist Federation of Australia. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for “service to the community through leadership roles with the Zionist Federation of Australia, the promotion and development of Australia-Israel relations and youth”. He initiated the Birthright/Taglit and MASA Israel program in Australia.

The plenum will be held on Tuesday 20 June at 7:30pm in Darlinghurst. Inquiries: 9360 1600.

    You could organize it.

After serving in the Australian Army I was a volunteer in the 6 Day War and then served and was wounded in The War of Atrition and I served in The Yom Kippur War in The Sinai. I live in Melbourne but I would so much have liked to have been with my mates in Sydney. Why cannot we have here an occasion similar to what you are having in Sydney. Perhaps some-one could arrange one here?
