A leading Hindu and an American rabbi have called on Queensland to revise its religious education policy. In a joint statement, Rajan Zed and Rabbi Jonathan R. Freirich have asked authorities to treat all major religions equally. They are asking Queensland not to stop at just Bible lessons but to teach in Queensland schools comparative religion lessons and local indigenous beliefs. They have also suggested that the viewpoints of non-believers should be taken into consideration.

In their statement, Zed and Freirich point out that the Queensland Education Act states that “Instructions may be given in State primary and special schools during school hours in selected Bible lessons.”

The religious leaders said: “Opening up children to major world religions andĀ indigenousĀ beliefs would make them well-nurtured enlightened citizens of tomorrow.”
