Sydney Emanuel School alumnus, Amy Meyer (Class of 2009), has won a Bronze medal for Judo at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.Amy-Meyer-at-290-2014-Commonwealth-GamesCompeting in the under-48kg category, the Judo champion is currently ranked second in the country.

Amy’s Commonwealth Games selection is the culmination of years of training and competing in the martial arts arena after joining forces with her University of New South Wales (UNSW) club coach, Warren Rosser OAM, when she was just seven years old.  Earlier this year she took home bronze at the 2014 Oceania Championship and she hopes the Commonwealth Games will be her stepping stone to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The lead up to Glasgow has been hard for 22 year old Amy as she juggled university, work and training. Testament to her tenacity and dedication, Amy graduated from Sydney University last year with a degree in exercise sport science.

Amy, whose persistence and positive attitude knows no bounds, shared the following advice to aspiring athletes, “At the start of this Commonwealth Games campaign there was very little hope of me being able to qualify.  I just kept going to every single competition that I could and training as hard as I could. So my advice to people is never stop working for what you want because if you miss out this time, you are already one step closer to making it next time.”

Anne Hastings, Principal of Emanuel School commented, “We are so proud of Amy and to represent Australia is a dream come true. Amy is an exceptional role model for Emanuel School’s younger students and although she has graduated, her attitude is an inspiration for us all. We look forward to sharing her future successes.”

Amy lives in Dover Heights and trains six to seven days a week, with two training sessions each day at UNSW in Kensington. She returns to Sydney on 6 August, but will shortly after be leaving for Victoria to compete in the Southern Cross International Tournament.
