Former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr has cancelled a speaking appearance at an event because he refuses to be involved in any organisation not committed to a peaceful path for Palestinian statehood.

Earlier today, news broke about his planned appearance at the Al Quds at the 70th anniversary of Al Nakba commemorating the displacement that preceded and followed the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948.

But the functioning Sydney was also labelled “The Right of Return”.

Carr later tweeted “If the event is endorsed by people without a commitment to a peaceful path to a Palestinian nationhood I won’t be part of it”.

He has now accepted another invite to a function commemorating Al Nakba

ECAJ’s co-CEO Peter Wertheim welcomed Carr’s withdrawal from the “Right of Return” event.

Wertheim said: “What he continues to miss is that his reference to the “70th anniversary of Palestinian dispossession” implies that Israel’s establishment in 1948 itself created the Palestinian refugees, and that Israel is therefore an illegitimate state.  This is not consistent with the Oslo Accords and promotion of the internationally endorsed principle of two States for two peoples.  It is also historically false.  To quote from Benny Morris, a fearlessly impartial and diligent historian:

it cannot be stressed too strongly that…the events cumulatively amounting to the Palestinian Arab exodus occurred in wartime and were a product, direct and indirect, of that war, a war that the Palestinians started. The threat of battle and battle itself were the immediate backdrop to the various components of the exodus’

Bob Carr also has had nothing to say about the 800,000 Jews who were expelled from various Arab countries by their respective governments from 1948 onwards.”

Take it easy, Leon, it’s a step in the right(no pun intended) direction. At least now Carr is beginning to realize that the PA and Hamas, and pretty much all Arab and Muslim states have no interest in peace.
Just look on the bright side, for a change.

    • Henry Herzog says:

Then again, it’s pretty hard to find a bright side.

    • Leon Poddebsky says:

Henry, given his capacity for subterfuge and disingenuousness, it would not surprise me to learn that he engineered this apparent “moderation” in advance as window dressing.

  2. Dr.Rodney Gouttman says:

No groups who says it represents the Palestinian collective can never agree to a rapprochement with Israel, no matter, the delineation of borders, without the concept of return. This is the position of those who speak for Gaza. It is a basic principle that has always been at the core who claim governance of the so called Palestinian territory. To do otherwise would go back on a promise of many decade to those Palestinians and their descendants who sought out other places. To do otherwise would be suicidal for those advocating this new path to peaceful negotiations.

  3. Leon Poddebsky says:

It is a lie to claim that the Oslo Accords called for a “Palestinian state.”

Yitzhak Rabin was vehemently opposed to such a state.

  4. Leon Poddebsky says:

No sooner were the Oslo Accords signed than the Arab ‘Palestinian’side flagrantly and habitually violated them.
Their fuhrer, Yasser Arafat, openly boasted that the agreements were an Arab Trojan horse planted inside Israel’s heartland.
The consequences of the Oslo Accords have been the murder of at least 2,000 Israeli Jews, a tsunami of Israel-hatred internationally.
However, the latter consequence has so emboldened the PLO/PA/FATAH et al that they are now not even bothering to wear the mask of “moderation”, a mask that was fashioned for them by cunning Western antisemites such as President Carter and some in the Australian Labor Party.

  5. Leon Poddebsky says:

His Australian Labor Party has committed itself to lend diplomatic support for the creation of what effectively would be a second Hamas state (in addition to the current de facto Gaza Strip Hamas state.)
Hamas is an avowedly genocidal and politicidal entity.
