Rabbi Dovid Slavin, Mendel’s father and head of Sydney’s Our Big Kitchen told J-Wire that NSW Governor Marie Bashir spent time with the family on the journey to India expressing “a lot of interest in the Barmitzvah”. Governor Bashir was on the same outgoing flight from Sydney as the Slavin family and has visited Our Big Kitchen where food is prepared for Emergency Services.

Mendel addressed an international gathering in Chabad House in Mumbai in which Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka were murdered by terrorists in the 2008 attack.

Rabbi Slavin told J-Wire: “Rabbi Chanoch Gechtman is the new Rabbi in Mumbai. He has gone there with his young family and from our perspective  to have chosen to do so, means we are all owe in for his commitment.”

He added: “The Slavins wanted to do our bit to  make sure that the work of Chabad In Mumbai will not end with the terror attacks hence the new beginning of the barmi in Mumbai and for our young son and family to see firsthand the sacrifices being made by Chabad rabbis around the globe”
