A research delegation from Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is heading to Israel later this month to foster existing research collaborations and initiate new partnerships.

The delegation, being led by Professor Jonathan Shaw, endocrinologist, epidemiologist and Deputy Director of the Institute, will also participate in research symposiums at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa.

During the past several years, the Institute and Israeli scientists have been sharing their expertise in cardiovascular and diabetes research with each other, in order to accelerate research and forge new partnerships. This has been made possible thanks to the incredible support of a donor from Melbourne’s Jewish community.

Since 2015, Institute scientists have made regular trips to Israel and in 2017, the Baker Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hadassah Medical Center to promote collaborative research, and staff and student exchange. The Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce is also working with the Institute to establish institutional partnerships, collaborations and a Friends of Baker in Israel.

Professor Shaw says there are a range of exciting research projects underway including studies looking at new ways to prevent and treat heart beat irregularities, as well as the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes based on the study of beta cell death.

“The time that Baker Institute researchers spend in laboratories in Israel provides a wonderful opportunity for the scientists to come together and develop new approaches to treatment that hopefully will improve the lives of people with diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” Professor Shaw says.
