A 78-yr-old South African pediatrician arrested on a manslaughter charge whilst in transit in Dubai remains in an Abu Dhabi jail following a court decision yesterday not to release him on bail.

Professor Cyril Karabus with his wife Jennifer

The Cape Town-based Professor Cyril Karabus was arrested on August 18 when in transit from Canada where he had attended his son’s wedding. He was charged with manslaughter following the 2002 treatment of a three-yr-old boy suffering from leukaemia. The patient failed to respond to treatment and died.Professor Karabaus was charged in absentia and without being informed.

The paedatric has headed up the Red Cross Children’s  Oncology unit and was had been working at the Sheik Kalafa Medical Centre.

On Thursday, the prosecution failed to produce evidence relating to the case. Bail was refused without explanation.

The case impacts on all Australians following the decision of Qantas to introduce Dubai as its main hub to Europe in April, 2013.

The airline has told media that non-Israelis with Israeli stamps on their passports may enter Dubai without a visa. Qantas has also confirmed that it will maintain hubs at Hong Kong and Bangkok offering transfers to Israel. The new association with the UAE-based airline Emirates will also offer Kosher food on Emirates aircraft on Qantas associated routes.

A groundswell of protest is increasing against the arrest.

Professor Karabus had been travelling on Emirates and a family member confirmed that he had used the airline between 2002 and 2012.

As a Frequent traveler who has used Qantas most of my life I have just changed over to Singapore airlines Krisflyer and their Star alliance ., Less points are required for same travel than Qantas , more affiliated airlines which makes much more seats available and the phone service of the Singapore staff is fabulous.

I would love to see if Qantas would ever dare join forces with an airline that discriminated against Arab Nationals, Jews are disposable ,, no Oil, and no threats of violence form Jews if they don’t get their own way.

al’ Qantas can get into bed with the Arabs but I will try to avoid them from now on so should any Jews that support Israel.

Rather simple don’t fly Qantas, they are expensive, have extremely poor service & old planes.
Haven’t flown them for over 10 years and it has been far more pleasurable, try Singapore airlines.

QANTAS’ Dubai detour is a matter of concern for Jews. But one must also be concerned about the behaviour of mohammedan regimes, bearing in mind the detention of an Australian lawyer and another woman in Libya, the arrest of a US agent who shot attackers in Pakistan in self-defense, the charging in Egypt of US/Egyptian dual citizens, the rape, torture and murder in Iran of a Canadian/Iranian journalist and Iran’s kidnapping of US tourists in Iraq. Those regimes and the one in Dubai, disregard normal practices of law at the same time that they demand that Western nations apply their laws in a most favourable way to mohammedans. While that is a major part of the problem, the other major part it the lack of will by Western governments to tell the rulers of those regimes to join the 21st century or have their Western assets frozen.

i hope we don’t ever see a Entebee style hijacking at Dubai Airport where a selection process by Arab Hijackers asks to see everyone’s passports . In would like to have a name like ‘Goldberg’ or Israeli stamps on my passport sitting in Business class waiting to be selected!

That’s not bad news from Dubai. That’s GOOD news from Dubai.

  6. Rita says:

DONT FLY QANTAS, it’s now fast becoming the Emirates (and all the dangers that this represents) in disguise.
