Sydney’s Moriah College year 10 student, Ricky Schlessinger will participate in SciTech,  a (northern hemisphere) summer program which takes place annually in July-August at the Technion itself.

The program enables senior high school students from around the world to work and study in laboratories with Technion students and professors.

“We are extremely pleased that Ricky has been selected. This year students from all Sydney Jewish day schools were invited to apply and next year we will open the scheme up to all year 10 students,” Technion Australia (NSW) president, Dr Ruth Ratner said.

The high standards normally set for admission to the Technion are applied to SciTech with the result that it is very competitive.

Ricky Schlessinger  is very excited and looking forward to working in a Technion lab on a challenging project and hoping to be placed in a group researching either metastatic cancer or stem cell research. He sees this as an opportunity to have a window into a possible career choice.

“The Technion is known as an international centre of scientific and engineering excellence and I am looking forward to being in the home of so many world break-throughs,” said Ricky.

“The prospect of meeting students from around the world is also very exciting and we have already set up a WhatsApp group and started getting to know one another,’ he said.

“We are also pleased that Moriah College has again been flexible in allowing Ricky to attend the program,” Dr Ratner said.

John Hamey, Moriah College Principal, said the College was very proud that one of its students was again selected.

Hamey said: “Moriah College is committed to preparing our students for the 21st century world and our STEAM program, which integrates the learning areas of Science, Technology, Art, Engineering and Mathematics, is an important component. We see participation in the Technion’s SciTech as a wonderful opportunity for a unique student experience and we value our relationship with one of the best science, engineering and high-tech universities in Israel and the world. It is through such relationships that we are able to provide incredibly engaging real-world experiences for our students to explore innovation, creativity and critical thinking.”

Great news. Congrats Ricky! Good to see, how Moriah fully utilises the academic flexibility available in Year 10. Experiences like this, often make a considerable long-term difference to a student. Never too early to have something really solid on your CV! Plus being solo in Israel for a couple of months at ‘a tender age,’ shall be most valuable.
