The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed that an Australian citizen is being held in an Israeli detention centre following the attempt of another fleet to break the Gaza blockade.

A DFAT spokesperson told J-Wire: “A 35 year old Australian man from New South Wales was detained on Friday 4 November. He was processed at Ashdod port in Israel and has now been transferred to an immigration facility. Consular officials visited the man on Saturday 5 November and are providing consular assistance. Consular officials in Australia are in contact with the man’s family.”

Media reports state that the detained Australian was on of 21 activists on two protest boats who decided against immediate deportation.

Their cases remain to be dealt with by Israeli courts.
