19-yr-old Greenbaum took the silver representing Australia in the event at which  Argentina won gold and Peru came in third.  Aerobic Gymnastics, which is not yet an Olympic sport but was demonstrated at the Rio Games, has only the World Cup and World Championship’s as its major events.

The event, which requires progression through preliminary qualifiers, a semi final and then final saw the from Blakehurst in Sydney  taking first in the preliminaries and second through the qualifying round.  The Finals, where only the top 8 competed, was a closely fought battle between Deborah and the reigning event Champion from Argentina.  The final outcome saw Deborah achieving a personal best score but it was not enough to topple Argentina.  Deborah says she is looking forward to next year’s competition where, with even more experience she hopes to better her performance.

This year, Deborah has also competed in the World Championships in Korea and another of the World Cup series, the Suzuki World Cup in Japan.  Deborah came 30th in the World Championship’s where two skills were not paid and 17th in the Suzuki World Cup.  With even more training and experience, Deborah’s hopes her most recent results are the start of Deborah coming into her own on the international stage.

When not training, Deborah has also finished year 12 with excellent scores and continues to undertake community work.  She is also completing her FIG Coaches qualification as well as her FIG judges qualification.  Next up gymnastics wise comes the Australian Championships in September and selection for next year’s international events in January.

Deborah attended MLC for High School and Emanuel School for Primary.
