AUSiMED will host a charity art auction in Melbourne next week combined with a cocktail party, entertainment and unique food…with funds raised being directed to breast cancer research.

Breast cancer from inherited defective BRCA1 or 2 genes is a particular issue for the Jewish community as its prevalence is 1 in 40 women, which is a 10 times higher incidence than the general community.

AUSiMED (Australia/Israel Medical Research)  has organised The Search Party, a charity art auction and cocktail party, complemented with unique dishes created by celebrated chef Guy Grossi of Grossi Florentino, Monday 7th September at Mossgreen Auction House, with comedian Rachel Berger as MC.

Local artists, including Polixeni Papapetrou, have united to auction their coveted artwork, to raise money for a vital research study to understand why certain breast cancers don’t respond to current treatments, including those linked to mutated BCRA1 or 2 genes (which increase the chance of developing breast cancer). The study aims to explore underlying causes and treatment responses.

Roz Kaldor-Aroni, CEO of AUSiMED (Australia/Israel Medical Research), says “Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and is one of the leading causes of cancer death in the western world. Despite the fact it is a very common disease there is still much that is unknown, including insights into the events that trigger resistance to treatment of the disease. The strong need to better understand this area has inspired the research study.”

Although “The Search Party Auction” event aims to raise funds for an important cause, the night will also have an entertainment focus, and will provide a unique fusion of Melbourne’s two loves, food and art. Polixeni who will be auctioning the work pictured above, said: “The title of the work “I’m not myself you see” is poetic in a way, because when you undergo cancer treatment you are transformed in so many ways and it can be confusing. Sometimes you do not feel like the self that you know or look like.”

Chef Guy Grossi will be curating a menu like no other, experimenting with kosher meats alongside a range of delicious ingredients. A range of gourmet canapés will make up a special tasting menu and Grossi will speak about his connection with Jewish traditional food in Italy and why the cause is something he feels strongly about. “Creating an exciting menu and helping to raise money for a worthwhile cause are both things that are close to my heart. We will be putting on an event to remember while funding critical research,” Grossi said.

Mossgreen CEO, Paul Sumner will be hosting the auction and the artists showcasing their work, will ensure there’s a diverse range of beautiful art. Polixeni has been the recipient of numerous grants from the Australia Council for the Arts and Arts Victoria. Her work is held by public, corporate and private collections in Australia and internationally. Creating fantastical worlds set against both real and imagined backdrops, her child subjects are transformed by masks and costumes uncannily inhabiting other times and places.

AUSiMED has engaged world leading scientists from Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne and Sheba Medical Centre in Israel to work together on this important project.

AUSiMED is a new not for profit, health promotion charity, established in 2012 able to send tax deductible donations to Israel. Its purpose is to fundraise to bring the best Australian and Israeli scientists together, from any institution, to collaborate on medical research. From these two great medical research nations working together, AUSiMED is hoping to bring about really significant health improvements for Australia, Israel and the world.
