Art hopping in Sydney

Sydneysiders are invited to take a scenic tour from North Bondi to Vaucluse visiting artists in their studios and discovering the meaning behind each work.

Towering high above the street with a stupendous view of North Bondi is the light-filled home and studio of mixed media artist Gill Cohn. Inside are rice paper screens that showcase subtle, organic layers – each one as individual as the next. When Gill was asked the inspiration behind her screens she pointed to the lovely blue gum trees right outside her property and the connection is obvious, “the delicate patterning of blue gums and rock formations inspire my work” she says.

This is just one of the many conversations to be had at the Art Hop Sydney event, where Sydneysiders can join the scenic tour.

Founded by Gill and fellow mixed media artist Derryn Tal, over a cup of coffee, Derryn explains the event, “It’s like tasting different flavours. We wanted a unique opportunity for the public and industry professionals alike to see beyond the art and understand the context, technique, and personality behind it.”

This year, as part of Art Hop’s 5th anniversary, Derryn will launch her range of ‘mini artwork’ jewelry, complimenting her intriguing mixed media pieces that use alchemic reactions to explore elusive moments of splendor and change.

There will also be art demonstrations, art works to be won, and pieces available for sale as always. Expect to be inspired by the depth and emotion of Ewa Henner’s portraits and landscapes, engaged and entertained by Camille Fox’s figurative, humorous paintings, and impressed by the sculptural and functional works of ceramicists Lia Klugman, Laura Jankelson and Gillian Hodes. Whilst Gill Cohn showcases the natural world’s fragility and strength through encaustic mixed media, Derryn Tal’s work explodes with dynamic form and colour.

The perfect opportunity to meet industry professionals and interact with inspired artists, this enjoyable trail from studio to studio is a relaxed, informal way to discover art in its creative context.

Art Hop is a free weekend event open 10am – 5pm, 25-26 November. For more information contact:
