The Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) and the Ecumenical and Interfaith Commission (EIC) of the Archdiocese of the Catholic Church have co-hosted the fourteenth Jewish and Catholic Friendship Dinner at the Catholic Leadership Centre.

JCCV President Jennifer Huppert and EIC Chair Fr Cameron Forbes welcomed over eighty members of Victoria’s Jewish and Catholic communities to the evening.  The highlight was a discussion panel focused on youth issues, including Shira Appelboom from Netzer and Kedem, Tobi Rosengarten from AUJS, Angela Markas from the Chaldean Catholic community and Kath Spencer from Vinnies and the Archdiocese office for youth.

The panel was expertly moderated by Maria Kirkwood, Director of Catholic Education in Sale.  Issues explored included LGBTI acceptance and inclusion, mental health, homelessness and the cost of living, listening to youth concerns and respect for the voice of youth.

Ms Huppert stated, “It is excellent to see the partnership and friendships between our faith communities continue to shine over these fourteen friendship dinners.  We meet together with immense goodwill and enjoy very productive discussions of issues of mutual concern.”

It’s heartening to hear there are conversations about LGBTI acceptance and inclusion, which ironically feed into the issues of mental health and homelessnes when LGBTI people are neglected and marginalised.
