ABC television news has defended itself after screening a graphic showing a map of the Middle East showing Palestine and not Israel, causing a member of the community post it on his Facebook.

The offending graphic was published the Daily Mail after seeing on Avi Yemini’s Facebook page. Yemini runs a gym in Melbourne teaching Israeli self-defence technique Krav Maga in his IDF Training gym.

Yemini wrote on his Facebook “Last night ABC News wiped Israel off their map, They’re literally doing the Islamists’ dirty work for them. We must DEFUND these traitors immediately.”

But an ABC senior executive told J-Wire: “The story was about the repealing of a law in Lebanon that allowed rapists to escape punishment if they married their victims.

The map showed other countries where this law had already been repealed (in the blue) and countries where campaigners are actively trying to have it repealed (in the yellow).

As this law does not exist in Israel, and never has, it was not shown on the map.

In context, I wonder if including Israel in the map might have attracted more warranted criticism .. the story had nothing at all to do with it.

We have commented on the story to the Daily Mail and they’ve amended the story.”

But Yemini ran a further post saying: “The ABC is very triggered this morning at my Facebook post from last week. They’ve hit back with an excuse that could almost work.
Except for one ‘minor’ detail: PALESTINE IS NOT A COUNTRY!”

J-Wire has asked ABC why the area of map which should delineate Israel is also yellow.

  1. Leon Poddebsky says:

The ALP does not support the so-called “two-state” concept.
The ALP supports Hamas and the ‘Palestinian’ “Authority”, two entities that deny the Jews’ right to an independent state in The Land of Israel.
Both the ALP and the ‘Palestinian’ Authority mask their real vision with propaganda rhetoric, but both are hostile to Israel’s existence.
And the ABC colludes with them.

  2. Liat Kirby says:

I agree with David Singer completely and have nothing to add, except my anger.

Oh, and good on you Avi Yemini, for your original Facebook posting calling it out, as well as that most pertinent observation posted afterwards, ‘PALESTINE IS NOT A COUNTRY’.

  3. Gedeon Herschberg says:

Ridiculous. Lebanon mentioned above “Palestine” is a country. But this does not need justification. There is obvious bias and missinformation meant here!

  4. Warren Zauer says:

Doesn’t the ABC have any colours other than yellow and blue? It could have shown the within the Green Line part of Israel in red and labelled as a category that never had the law.

And if it was too small to show the details they could have had a blow-up in a circle situated in the Mediterranean or over Saudi Arabia showing Israel in red and the PA (not Palestive!) in yellow.

This would, of course, required an acjnowledgement that Israel has a better value system than it’s neighbours, and in particular than the PA.

  5. Alan Freedman says:

What a weak excuse by the ABC! They knew exactly what they were doing and display such arrogance in expecting that the Jewish community will swallow that rubbish.

  6. Jack Chrapot says:

The issue is not whether Palestine is a country or not but rather that much of the area on the map designated “Palestine” is in fact Israel. All major parties in Australia support the two state concept so this map is actually the BDS/Hamas/Fatah map (which is also endorsed by the Neo-Nazi groups) that airbrushes Israel out of existence. In view of this, the excuse for the sham of a map as published by the ABC is also shameful in its dishonesty.

  7. david singer says:

The ABC should be ashamed of itself for firstly publishing a false and inaccurate map and secondly for trying to justify its publication.

Australian taxpayers fund the ABC to the tune of One Billion Dollars per annum to present fair and balanced news – not propaganda.

The Managing Director of the ABC needs to intervene and investigate who was responsible for producing the segment containing this map, the “senior executive” who tried to justify it and take disciplinary action to make sure it is not repeated.

The report should be removed and trashed immediately.

    • Paul Winter says:

All true, David. But Avi Yemeni’s b***s*** detector hit the mark. The ABC’s “map” showed the non-existent Palestine, but literally wiped Israel off the map. And J-wire’s question of why the patch where Israel should have been was coloured yellow – places attempting to repeal the repulsive legislation – is equally relevant because it implies that Israel has such laws.

I won’t hold my breath waiting for our leaders to raise this matter with the appropriate ministers.

    • Leon Poddebsky says:

The ABC preceded the ALP by quite a few years as yet another entity that is hostile to Israel’s existence.
They would deny this, but their actions prove it.

  8. Pesach Steinberg says:

Proof that the ABC’s explanation is a lie… If you zoom in on the map you will note that all of “Palestine” (i.e. Israel) is coloured yellow)
