A Sydney man has celebrated his Barmitzvah on the 60th anniversary in the year marking where it should have been performed.

David Rubain and Tzuriel and Avila

David Rubain was born December, 1943 in Shanghai. When he was five years old, his family fled from the communist invasion to Israel with just a few possessions. Here they were housed in immigrants’ transit camps until they were relocated to the new settlements and their own home. Life was a struggle, and so, having close relatives in Australia, his parents and siblings moved to Sydney. David finished his army service and joined them at the end of 1962.

In 1965 he met Maria and they have just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. In 1992 David had major brain surgery and has been a continuing inspiration to all he comes in contact due to his great determination to live life to the fullest.

David didn’t have a formal barmitzvah in Israel, so with the help and guidance of Tzuriel Avila, the very respected and popular minister of the Southern Sydney Synagogue, David celebrated the 60th anniversary of his Barmitzvah on 24th December. He performed his Parsha with much feeling in front of family and friends.
