Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has welcomed the announcement that Iran has met its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear deal, a move that will lead to the lifting of sanctions

But Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran “has not relinquished its aspiration to obtain nuclear weapons”.

In a media release Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said: “The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said this brings about ‘Implementation Day’ for the plan of action, which was agreed with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.

This plan of action aims to constrain Iran’s nuclear program over the long-term; provide verifiable assurances to the international community that Iran’s nuclear activities will remain exclusively peaceful; and ensure that any attempt by Iran to pursue a nuclear weapon would be detected promptly.

It is expected that sanctions on Iran, under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, will be lifted after the Security Council has received the IAEA report in coming days.

The Australian Government will then move to lift relevant UN and certain autonomous sanctions, including economic sanctions.

The easing of these sanctions will ensure that Australian business is not disadvantaged in pursuing opportunities in Iran.

Australia will continue to enforce sanctions on military exports for five years, and maintain restrictions on ballistic missile-related materiel for eight years.”

Netanyahu;s reaction to the news was to say: “Israel will continue to monitor the implementation of the agreement and will warn about any violation.

Even after the signing of the nuclear agreement, Iran has not relinquished its aspiration to obtain nuclear weapons and it will continue to undermine stability in the Middle East and spread terrorism around the world while violating its international obligations.

The major powers and the IAEA must closely monitor activity at Iran’s nuclear installations and other sites in order to verify that it is not continuing to develop nuclear weapons in secret. Unless there is an appropriate response to each violation, Iran will understand that it can continue to develop nuclear weapons, undermine regional stability and spread terrorism.

Israel will continue to monitor the situation and warn about Iran’s negative activity, and will do everything necessary to safeguard its security and defend itself.”

Business “opportunities” is the key to understanding why the West is co-operating with the Iranian nuclear drive. Some might call it unbridled avarice.
There exists a kind of historical parallel: Lenin, a father of Bolshevism, said that the capitalists would sell the communists the rope with which the latter would hang the former.

What would Julie Bishop even know about it?!

  3. Raymond Phillips says:

The USA nuclear deal with Iran is a very foolish agreement. Do people really think that Iran will commit faithfully to deal. And as for the Australian Federal government going along with Obama has me rather concerned.

  4. Ian Katz says:

Barack Obama Malcolm Turnbull Julie bishop John Kerry : ensuring terrorism is alive and well around the world.
