In her first week as principal of Perth’s Carmel School , Shula Lazar was reading headlines proclaiming it the Western Australia’s top-performing academic school.

The 2015 results are indeed impressive, with 66% of Carmel School graduates being placed in the top 10% of the State with an ATAR above 90%.

The median ATAR for Carmel School was 93.75 and 88% of students scored in the top 30% of the State.

In communicating the results to Carmel parents Shula Lazar also noted that “while Carmel appreciates and celebrates the academic success of this year’s graduates, it is understood that the Carmel student carries much more than just a top ATAR score. A Carmel graduate is characterised by a strong Jewish and Zionist identity, a desire to contribute to both the Jewish and wider community and a thirst for learning that endures long after they leave the warm embrace of Carmel.”

Shula Lazar has joined Carmel School, W.A.’s only Jewish day school, following 16 years at Leibler Yavneh Collage in Melbourne.

A passionate educator with a background in Jewish education and econometrics, she was appointed to Carmel School following an extensive recruitment process.

In an exclusive interview for J-Wire, Shula Lazar noted her first impression was that Carmel School was a top institution in every respect. She has received a warm welcome from students and parents, and also noted a team of incredibly dedicated teachers, noting that the outstanding 2015 results could not have been accomplished without such professionalism.

Shula Lazar intends to use her first year at the school to get to know the families and broader Perth Jewish community, as well as consolidating both the academic and Jewish credentials of Carmel School. This includes continuation of the Year 10 Shorashim trip to Israel, and integration of “the Tzevet”, a group religious Zionist Israelis including Torah Mitzion bachurim that add to the informal Jewish education of the school.

“When I walked into the school last year to meet the students, the first thing I noticed was how warm and friendly everyone was. The children have real “derech eretz” said Mrs Lazar. “I’m very excited to be leading Carmel School into a new era.”
