Daniel Goldbach, a  Year 12 student at Sydney’s Emanuel School, has been selected to represent Australia at the 24th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Italy in September 2012.

As one of four students nationally to be chosen for this prestigious competition, Daniel is honoured to represent his country. He said: “It’s the most prestigious competition of its kind. Many of the top companies in the world, including Google, prioritise IOI participants when recruiting, so making the team will hopefully open up many opportunities in my future. Informatics interests me because it’s essentially supercharged problem solving. It forces you to contort your mind out of its regular state and to formalise your thought patterns into coherent and unambiguous instructions that can be processed by a computer. “

Emanuel School Principal, Anne Hastings added, “We are so proud of Daniel’s outstanding achievement. To be chosen to represent one’s school and country is an exceptional honour.”

Informatics is the study of how information technology can be applied to almost any field and considers its impact on individuals, organisations and wider society. It uses computation as a tool to solve problems, communicate and express ideas. Daniel will be travelling to the IOI in Lake Garda, Italy from 23 to 30 September 2012.
