1982 Hakoah and Israeli consulate bombings – $100,000 reward
The NSW Government has announced a reward of $100,000 for information relating to the 1982 bombings of the Israeli Consulate in Sydney and the Hakoah Club at Bondi.
New South Wales Police Force and the Australian Federal Police investigating the 1982 bombings of the Israeli Consulate in Sydney and the Hakoah Club at Bondi have released new information about three men and the car believed to have been involved in the bombings.
Detective Chief Superintendent Wayne Gordon, Commander of the NSW Police Force Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command’s Anti-Terrorism and Security Group said through the course of the re-investigation into the bombings further information has come to light which could hold the key to identifying those responsible.
“Following examination of the historic exhibits, we have been able to retrieve forensic evidence, and that evidence from both incidents is the subject of further investigations and testing.”
“We have always said that the challenge for investigators will be to apply new technologies and investigative procedures to an historical crime, but we believe we have the capacity to meet the challenge, and we are doing that.”
“Our investigators have also found in the original records of the bombings a witness who identified seeing the Valiant parked at the Hahoah Club at about 3.50 pm which was less than three hours before the bombing.
“The witness said they saw three men standing near the boot of the vehicle with one of the men holding something. What that ‘something’ was, we don’t know, and unfortunately the witness who provided the information is deceased.
“The description of the man holding the item is about 24-years-old, about 5’ 6” (or 168cm) tall, average build, olive complexion, short hair side burns, well groomed and was wearing dark coloured clothing.”
“While it was over 30 years ago we know there are still members of the public who have information about what happened, and we need to talk to them,” Detective Chief Superintendent Gordon said.
Det. Ch.Supt Gordon added that as previously outlined a woman was also involved along with two men in the purchase of the 1970 Green Valiant sedan which was used to place the improvised explosive device used at the Hakoah Club, Bondi.
“We have been able to link these three suspects using a vehicle similar to a silver 1979 Chrysler station wagon to travel to the caryard at Parramatta Road at Burwood, where they purchased the 1970 Green Valiant sedan.
Background:
About 2.00pm on 23 December 1982, an explosive device detonated in the stairwell of premises adjacent to fire exit door of the Israeli Consulate General, 80 William Street, Sydney. As a result of the blast two (2) people were injured and significant damage was caused to the building.
About 6.45pm that same day a second explosive device was located within the boot of a vehicle parked in a car park of the Hakoah Club, 61-67 Hall Street, Bondi. The device failed to detonate properly and resulted in the timing device being blown clear.
No one was directly injured as a result of this explosion, however, significant damage was caused to the vehicle in which the explosive device was placed and at least two (2) other vehicles sustained significant damage.
At the time of this explosion there were a large number of athletes within the Hakoah Club.
