Two talented young Jewish performers feature in the upcoming production of RENT by Sydney’s Chatswood Musical Society.

Breina ABo

Dylan Rosenthal

North Shore Temple Emanuel member Breina Abo and young Masada College student Dylan Rosenthal star in the hugely popular Jonathan Larson pop musical – a re-imagining of the romantic (and tragic) Puccini opera La Boheme – but set in New York in the ’80. RENT tells of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Puccini’s Marcello the painter becomes Mark Cohen, the digital video artist, Rodolfo the poet becomes Roger Davis the songwriter and Mimi is a junkie… still with cold hands and a candle that needs lighting!

On Broadway, RENT gained critical acclaim and won many awards include the Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008, after a 12-year run and 5124 performances – making it one of the longest-running Broadway shows of all time. In 2005, it was also adapted into to a popular and acclaimed movie.

The Chatswood production plays from 23 September to 1 October at the Zenith Theatre. Bookings and info www.chatswoodmusicals.org  or call 02 9777 7547.
